How Long Does Tan Last? Deciding Without an Exact Date

A natural tan clears in weeks, not days. The most direct measurement available puts UVA-induced pigmentation on the inner forearm at 36.2 ± 6.2 days to disappear, reported by Kazuhisa Maeda in Cosmetics in 2017, because melanin leaves only when the cells carrying it are shed. Facial colour goes sooner, since turnover runs faster on environmentally exposed skin. A self-tanner runs on a different clock. Dihydroxyacetone stains the outermost dead layer, and dermatology sources report 5 to 7 days of visible colour, 3 to 10 by formulation. The FDA is blunt about the first kind. The melanin increase that produces a tan is a sign of damage, so none of these numbers is a schedule for topping it up.

Which tan are you watching fade?

Every useful answer forks here, and search results usually do not. One seven-to-ten-day figure gets applied to sunlight, sunbeds, spray tans and bottled lotion as though a single mechanism produced them.

Two do. Ultraviolet radiation triggers melanogenesis, in which melanocytes at the base of the epidermis make melanin and pass it to neighbouring keratinocytes. Dihydroxyacetone, the active in every self-tanner, never reaches a melanocyte. It reacts with amino acids in the stratum corneum through the Maillard reaction, forming brown polymers called melanoidins.

How long a natural tan lasts, in measured days

The FDA's tanning page gives the front end of the clock. After UV exposure, increased melanin may darken skin tone over the next 48 hours. That is why colour often arrives after people have left the beach.

The back end is harder to find, because almost nobody measures it. Maeda's 2017 study is the cleanest attempt I have located. Six healthy Japanese men, Fitzpatrick types III and IV, aged 26 to 51, had the untanned inner forearm irradiated with 40 J/cm² of UVA, a dose the paper equates to two or three hours of summer daytime exposure. Darkening was read with a Mexameter MX16 at 14, 21, 28 and 35 days. Pigmentation returned to baseline in 36.2 ± 6.2 days, close to the 39-day figure obtained decades earlier with radiolabelled thymidine.

Six men, one body site, one phototype band. It is the best anchor available, not a population average.

I should be plain about what I cannot tell you. I do not measure people. I hold no biopsies, no melanin index readings, no record of how your epidermis clears pigment, and I would not put an archivist's estimate against a dermatologist's examination. What I can vouch for is the other half of the comparison, meaning how a given self-tanner behaves across date codes and storage histories, and how far a printed wear claim drifts from the product in someone's hand.

Why the 28-day skin cycle cannot predict your fade

I used to answer fade questions with the 28-day number. Until roughly 2022 I told people a tan follows the skin's monthly cycle and left it there, because a fixed interval matched the shelf-life reasoning I already applied to products. I stopped once I read the turnover measurements against each other. They disagree, for a good reason.

Dansyl chloride and dihydroxyacetone stain only the stratum corneum, so they measure how long the dead outer layer takes to renew, which the Takahashi group put at 13.9 ± 2.9 days on the forearm across 14 subjects averaging 30 years old. Melanin sits deeper, through living epidermis, so it answers to epidermal turnover instead, measured by Maeda at 36.2 days and by the radiolabel literature at 39. Those are not competing estimates of one thing. They are two layers on two schedules, and 28 days belongs to neither.

The spread on top of that is documented. Stratum corneum transit runs near 20 days in young adults and lengthens by more than 10 days in older adults. Turnover accelerates on environmentally exposed skin. Maeda found a correlation of only 0.3247 between age and epidermal turnover time, meaning age explains part of the variation and leaves most of it unexplained.

How long a tan lasts on the face

Less time than anywhere covered. Turnover on exposed sites runs faster than on protected ones, so facial colour clears ahead of a forearm or a torso. How much faster has not been published. I found no facial equivalent of the 36.2-day measurement, making that number a ceiling for the face with no floor under it.

Why fading looks different on brown and deep skin

Peeling rates differ by skin tone, and peeling is what makes fade look abrupt. A 2026 survey in the International Journal of Dermatology by Williams and colleagues, with 1,069 completed responses including 372 people of colour, recorded peeling after sun exposure in 64 percent of light tones, 47 percent of medium and 28 percent of deep. Darkening moved the other way, at 55, 64 and 69 percent. Pain to touch fell from 46 to 22 to 18 percent.

Line those three up. As tone deepens, less of the response arrives as shedding and pain, and more as pigment. A tan that never peels has no sudden step down in colour, so it reads as lasting longer even where clearance is similar.

The same survey found 15 percent of people of colour said they had never had a sunburn while still endorsing post-exposure symptoms, against 0.5 percent of other respondents. That gap matters more than the fade question. Sunburn shows less obviously on darker skin, and a burn nobody names is a burn nobody treats.

One limit worth stating. The survey measured reported symptoms, not fade rates. It explains why fading looks different; it does not count days.

What peeling does to the calendar

Full sunburn effects take 6 to 48 hours to appear, per the FDA. Peeling follows days later and changes the shape of the fade rather than shortening it. A sheet of pigmented dead cells leaves at once, so colour goes patchy while melanocytes underneath keep loading pigment into fresh keratinocytes. Skin can look blotchy and stay tanned.

Sunburn is not a fringe event. CDC's May 2026 MMWR report on 2024 survey data found 88.1 million US adults, 35.1 percent, had at least one sunburn in the previous 12 months, rising to 46.0 percent among those aged 18 to 29, with 18.8 million reporting four or more.

The figure people ask for, what share of the body actually peels, does not exist in the literature I can reach. The nearest numbers measure something else. A ten-year review of the Manchester burn services by Dingle and colleagues, covering 228 adults and 131 children treated between 2010 and 2019, found a mean burned area of 2.00 percent of total body surface in adults and 2.12 percent in children, 81.1 percent of adult cases superficial or superficial partial thickness. That is burn extent in hospital cases, not the fraction of a holiday sunburn that flakes.

How long a self-tanner lasts, and why the mechanism matters

The 5-to-7-day figure is repeated everywhere, and its provenance is thinner than its confidence suggests. The clearest instance sits in a 2016 Journal of Drugs in Dermatology paper by Graves, Lloyd and Ross, which states that the reported duration of a DHA-induced tan is 5 to 7 days. Their protocol was one man in his thirties applying L'Oréal Paris Sublime Bronze Medium, a 5 percent DHA cream, daily for a week under reflectance spectrophotometry, and the duration claim itself rides on a citation tracing back to Levy's 1992 review in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. A 2018 ChemistryOpen review widens the window to 3 to 10 days by formulation, and a 2026 systematic review in the Journal of Cutaneous Medicine and Surgery by Laferté, Oliel and Pehr calls most of the DHA evidence base low quality.

I got this wrong in my own records before I learned to distrust single figures. For a year I logged wear windows from paired samples, entering one mousse as losing visible colour by day four. The pair was mismatched. I had drawn from a bottle opened eleven months earlier while its comparison unit sat unopened in the climate cabinet, and degraded DHA does not build the same colour to start with. That entry described a weakened product, not the formula. Voiding a season of records and rebuilding the index around date codes cost me a winter, which is why I now read every wear figure, the 5-to-7-day one included, as a claim about one sample with one storage history.

Colour quality diverges too. A 2020 PLOS ONE study by Amano, Xiao, Wuerger and Meyer applied a 7.5 percent DHA gel to 100 participants, with 60 controls supplying naturally sun-exposed skin. Natural tanning decreased lightness without adding yellowness. DHA moved along a straight line in the lightness-versus-yellowness plane, and at 24 hours about 20 percent of samples fell outside the natural range, visibly too yellow.

Aftercare does not transfer. Exfoliating removes a self-tan because the colour is the outer layer. Exfoliating a UV tan strips a thin surface while melanocytes keep depositing pigment underneath, which buys unevenness without a faster finish.

A tan is not sun protection, at any shade

The strongest argument against my position is that a tan does something, and it is not nothing. Coelho and colleagues, in Pigment Cell & Melanoma Research in 2015, gave 12 participants repetitive suberythemal exposures over two weeks and then challenged the tanned areas. They found a very modest photoprotective benefit from the UVB-induced tans. That is a real finding and I grant it.

What it does not support is the next step, treating a tan as a protective layer to be maintained with more sun. In the same study, UVA-induced tans provided no measurable photoprotection and failed to reach even a minimal SPF of 1.5. The FDA puts the extra melanin in tanned skin at an SPF of about 2 to 4 and says directly that this is far below its minimum recommended SPF of 15. A DHA self-tan is weaker still, at 1.3 to 2.2 according to the 2026 review by Resnick and colleagues in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology.

A tanning bed changes none of this. Same mechanism, artificial source, extra UV exposure, same SPF 2 to 4 at the end of it. No version of a base tan works as sunscreen.

When a colour change needs a clinician

The calendar is the wrong tool for some of these questions. A patch that stays markedly darker for months after one exposure, pigmentation that expands or turns asymmetric, a spot changing shape or colour, blistering sunburn, or peeling with fever belongs in front of a clinician, not in a fade timeline. Uneven fading is usually shedding. Uneven fading that keeps changing is not something an archive can read.

Deciding before an event, without an exact date

Nobody gets a date. What is available is the right clock and a margin.

  1. Name which colour you are holding, UV-induced melanin or DHA-stained surface cells.
  2. Count backwards on that clock. Self-tan colour runs in days, so apply within a week. UV colour runs in weeks and will be neither reliably present nor reliably gone on a given date.
  3. Patch-test any self-tanner and write down the date, since a one-in-five chance of visible yellowness is worth finding on a forearm.
  4. Protect the colour you have rather than renewing it with UV, using SPF 15 as the floor the FDA names, plus clothing and shade.
  5. Treat unevenness as information about shedding, not a prompt for more exposure.
